Christ made it clear that if we want to be the first in anything, we must attempt to be the last. It is hard to swallow for some, but the last will be first. Jesus instructed us to be willing to serve others, to take a humble approach to life, being void of all arrogance and pride. He was encouraging us to become servant on this earth. Which means considering others rather than ourselves, it means giving and not receiving, and it means propelling everyone else ahead of our own wants and desires.
To understand this we must comprehend our own standing in relation to the Lord’s. The Lord has the position and authority to raise us up in good standing among men, as He sees fit and as it brings glory and honor to His name. We are not to TAKE the position of being the head, but allow the Lord to bestow it upon us. It is a blessing, not a right. We cannot declare it to be so, if the Lord has not allowed it. Our job is to obey the Lord’s commands and follow His teachings however humbling they are.
Deuteronomy 28:13
The Message (MSG)
11-14 God will lavish you with good things: children from your womb, offspring from your animals, and crops from your land, the land that God promised your ancestors that he would give you. God will throw open the doors of his sky vaults and pour rain on your land on schedule and bless the work you take in hand. You will lend to many nations but you yourself won’t have to take out a loan. God will make you the head, not the tail; you’ll always be the top dog, never the bottom dog, as you obediently listen to and diligently keep the commands of God, your God, that I am commanding you today. Don’t swerve an inch to the right or left from the words that I command you today by going off following and worshiping other gods.
1 Peter 5:6
The Message (MSG)
6-7 So be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.
1 Peter 5:6
New Living Translation (NLT)
6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
Matthew 20:16
Amplified Bible (AMP)
16 So those who [now] are last will be first [then], and those who [now] are first will be last [then]. [a]For many are called, but few chosen.
In the world’s eyes you may never appear to be the head. But as long as you are following the Lord and obeying all His commands, it does not matter what you look like to the world. Knowing that God is pleased with you should be more than enough.
